The ‘Postman’ helps to deliver the Ryder Cup

On Sunday the 30^th September Team Europe beat the team from the USA to win golf’s prestigious Ryder Cup at Le Golf National Golf course in Paris, France, 17 ½ to 10 ½.

The Ryder Cup is a biennial men's golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States. The competition is contested every two years with the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe.

The Team Europe captain, vice-captain and players were as follows:

Captain: Thomas Bjorn.

Vice Captains: Luke Donald, Padraig Harrington, Robert Karlsson, Graeme Mcdowell and Lee Westwood

Players: Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Alex Noren, Thorbjorn Olesen, Paul Casey, Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson and Ian Poulter.

The Englishman Ian ‘The Postman’ Poulter, played a major role in the Team Europe victory.

Where does Ian get his nickname from?

They call him ‘The Postman’ because he always delivers. The Englishman has never lost a singles match in the Ryder Cup, being on the winning side in four of his five Ryder Cup appearances. He is undefeated in all Ryder Cup singles matches that he has participated in. Paul Mahoney, in the Independent newspaper, sums it up when about Paris, by saying:

“Ian Poulter finally knocked on the American’s door on Saturday then dropped two birdies through their letterbox.”

I think everyone will have seen Poulter cavorting around the 18th green at Le Golf National in a red fancy dress postbox given to him by a fan.

“I might go and deliver some letters around Lake Nona in it when I get home,” he joked in the press conference later, referring to where he lives in Orlando Florida.

The first boxes to be painted red were in London in July 1874, although it would be nearly 10 years before all the boxes had been repainted.”
