Why has there never been a Royal Mail Personalised Poppy or Remembrance Day Letterbox?

The Royal Mail has been personalising their red letterboxes for many years, celebrating special events or achievements. They have been painted in many different colours to stand out and mark particular celebrations.

We all remember the gold letterboxes of the 2012 Olympics, special hearts on red for Valentine’s Day, the white with gold bat and stumps for England Cricket Team’s World Cup victory, a yellow one for David Walliams on World Book Day and even singing postboxes for Christmas. Therefore, why for such an important iconic commemoration as Remembrance Day or Poppy Day have letterboxes not been painted?

Here are reminders:

The closest the Royal Mail came to any such commemoration was when they unveiled a special edition postbox honouring those who planned and fought in the D-Day Landings.

Royal Mail unveiled this special postbox in St James’s Square, London, on 5th June 2019. They said...

“The unveiling of the postbox was carried out by US Ambassador, Robert Wood Johnson. The location of the postbox was chosen due to its proximity to Norfolk House where Operation Overlord was planned under the leadership of Dwight D Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of Allied Expeditionary Forces. The postbox is in recognition of the of the vital role in the planning of the operation and to those who fought on the beaches of Normandy.”

Ambassador Johnson said: “On this 75th anniversary, I think it’s fantastic that Royal Mail is paying a special tribute to the tremendous courage and devotion of our D-Day heroes. We should always remember what so many millions of men and women sacrificed for the free world we have the privilege of living in today.”

David Gold, Director of Public Affairs, Royal Mail said: “The D-Day Landings played a pivotal role during World War II and Norfolk House was where a major part of the planning took place. It is only fitting that their efforts are honoured on one of our iconic postboxes.”
